Wamama coffee

Established in 2010 in Dar es Salaam as a micro-roastery and social enterprise, Wamama Kahawa Coffee offers freshly-roasted, old-fashioned Tanzanian coffee. Wamama Coffee now exists to source quality green bean coffee in Tanzania and other East African countries, cultivate coffee roasting as a craft among women, and promote this select green coffee for export and craft roasting in countries around the world.

The goal was to update the existing Wamama Kahawa visual identity to be more accessible to American markets, while still maintaining the integrity and ethos of the brand.

Visual concept

The Kitenge and the Khanga are pieces of fabric worn largely by women throughout Tanzania and neighboring countries. Typically, their design consists of three parts: a wide decorative border, a central motif, and a proverb or other written message. For the new brand, I drew inspiration from these textiles, to serve as a visual representation of both Tanzanian culture and of the skillful women behind Wamama Kahawa.
